Oxford and the Thames
A huge turning point in my life was going to St Anne's College, in Oxford University, to read physics. For relaxation I painted the College buildings, made of Cotswold stone that used to glow in the sunshine. I have strong associations with Balliol College, St Peter's College, the Sheldonian, the Radcliffe Camera, Christchurch College, and Christchurch Meadow, and have been back many times to paint and draw. I had to develop an eye for detail and perspective that has served me well. I also learned to appreciate river scenes, with still water that produced wonderful reflections, and I visited many towns on the River Thames, all the way down to Windsor, with its fantastic Castle reflections.
